About this place
South Korea, officially known as the Republic of Korea, is a vibrant and technologically advanced country located in East Asia. It shares a peninsula with North Korea, bordered by the Yellow Sea to the west and the Sea of Japan to the east. Known for its rapid economic development, South Korea transformed from a war-torn nation to a global economic powerhouse within a few decades. The capital city, Seoul, is a dynamic metropolis blending cutting-edge technology with rich cultural heritage, featuring historic palaces, bustling markets, and modern skyscrapers. Additionally, the country boasts a rich culinary tradition, renowned for dishes like kimchi, bulgogi, and bibimbap. With a strong emphasis on education and innovation, South Korea continues to influence global trends in technology, entertainment, and fashion while maintaining its unique cultural identity.
Travel Preparations
There are quite a few preparations that should be made before entering Korea.
Korea ETA Permit
Before booking your trip to Korea, ensure you have the necessary entry permit. The ETA permit must be obtained prior to entering the country to fulfil the travel purpose. You can check if your country requires a permit here [link], and you can apply for the permit here [link].
IOS Application
The usual apps on your phone might not work in Korea, as the information can differ significantly from popular applications like Google Maps. Therefore, it's a good idea to download these specific apps on your phone before arriving in Korea.
WOWPASS WOWPASS is a payment app that allows you to add credits and make payments with a card tap. First, download the app and visit an automated machine at Seoul Station or another location (you can find it in the app) selling WOWPASS cards to top up your account with the desired amount. The same card can also be used to top up TPASS, but you'll need to use the TPASS automated machine for that. It is very convenient because most of the payments can be made cashless and even top-up by using a credit card in the application. It works like a personalized debit card in Korea.
NAVER Map The information in Google Maps and Maps (from iPhone) is not very accurate when it comes to navigation and looking for good food and tourist spots. Because most of the people here use NAVER Map!! Is very convenient to locate every place that you wish to go and read reviews from other visitors. Is great!
Papago Papago is a popular translation app widely used in Korea. Its user interface is quite user-friendly. You can type, record, or take images, and the app will automatically translate Korean into your language or vice versa. (I also like the parrot logo XD).
Public Transportation
Airport Transport
If you're here for the first time, it is very convenient to travel from Incheon International Airport to Seoul. High-speed trains (Korea Train Express - KTX in short) and buses can be taken to the Seoul Station (which is quite central to every subway line and bus route) within two hours. Tickets are sold both from automatic machines and at the counter in the arrival hall.

Subway
The subway is very clean, convenient and foreigner-friendly because the sign boards are clear in Korean, English and Mandarin. The directions in the subway stations are very straightforward and locations are super convenient because you can reach every sightseeing spot with the subway from walking distance. To enjoy this service, you can purchase either a one-way subway ticket or top-up on a card (also known as WOWPASS, which comes along with the TPASS function) by using the automatic machines in every station.

Visitors can explore its majestic halls, scenic pavilions, and the National Palace Museum of Korea housed within its grounds.
Namshan Botanical Garden + Namshan Tower
Namsan Botanical Garden and Namsan Tower are two prominent attractions located on Namsan Mountain in Seoul, South Korea. The Namsan Botanical Garden offers a serene escape from the bustling city, featuring diverse plant species and beautifully landscaped gardens that highlight Korea's natural beauty. Namsan Tower, also known as N Seoul Tower, is an iconic landmark that provides panoramic views of the city. Completed in 1971, it stands as a popular destination for both tourists and locals, offering observation decks, restaurants, and cultural exhibitions. Together, these attractions provide a perfect blend of nature and urban scenery, making Namsan Mountain a must-visit destination in Seoul.
Suwon Hwaseong Fortress
The Hwaseong Fortress is a historic fortification located in Suwon, South Korea. [ a travelling distance of 2 hr by train from Seoul Station]. Constructed between 1794 and 1796 under the order of King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty, the fortress was built to honour and house the remains of his father, Prince Sado. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its sophisticated design, integrating both traditional Korean and modern military architectural techniques of the time.
The fortress features impressive walls, gates, and watchtowers that stretch over 5.7 kilometres, offering stunning views of the surrounding city. Visitors can explore its well-preserved structures, and enjoy scenic walks along the ramparts within the fortress grounds.
